"Huswifery"

Read "Huswifery," by Edward Taylor. Take notes and define any unfamiliar words. Then, respond to the following prompt, in no more than three sentences:

What comparison does the speaker make in "Huswifery"? Why does he make it? What effect does it have?

The deadline for responses is 3:00 PM on Thursday, September 29th, 2011. By 5 PM on the same day I will post all acceptable responses. After 5, it is up to you to go online to ensure that your response is posted; if it is not, let me know on Friday. Otherwise, I will assume there are no problems. Therefore, claiming you posted but had a problem with the technology will not be an excuse.
There will be no late penalties. If you miss the deadline, you will get a 0.

Think about the discussion we had on Tuesday. I will be looking for focus, structure, clarity and grammar/mechanics. With such a short format, remember to use words wisely and avoid "excess verbiage."

  1. the speaker is comparing him/herself to god's spinning wheel. He/she makes this comparison to show how women could express emotions through a daily chore, while still being loyal to god. this causes the reader to realize how much women impacted the puritan lifestyle and how much they were limited in work.

  2. In the Poem "Huswifery", by Edward Taylor, the spinning wheel and all the other things that are spoken about to make clothes are being compared to God. The reason why he makes this comparison is to show that all the people back then did their jobs for God in order to please him. Because of this, the person in the poem believes that God will be happy with him/her and he/she will live a good life.

  3. The comparison the speaker makes in this poem written by Edward Taylor is between "Huswifery" and God. He makes this comparison to display the differences from "Huswifery" and God and how "Huswifery" wants Gods help. The effect this has it to show how dependent people can be on God and how much they looked to God for help.

  4. A conceit is "an elaborate, often lengthy
    comparison between two completely different
subjects". In "Huswifery," Taylor creates a comparison between the making of cloth and the granting of god's grace; he does this so the audience realizes that he just hit a turning point in his life where realizes he must recommit his life to god. The effect for the audience is an intimate look into his mind and what he is thinking, the point of this comparison is to really bring the audience in and make them understand by using figurative language etc.

  5. In the "Huswifery" by Edward Taylor the speaker uses conceit to draw a comparison between the duties of a housewife(ie. sowing and weaving) to the Puritan duty of devoting one's life to God. He makes this comparison to show how, just like housewives in Puritan society, all observant Puritans are simply subservient beings. By stating that all Puritans must act in a manner subservient to God he effectively achieves the purpose of writing at that time, to glorify God, as well explaining his view of faith.

  6. With regard to the definition, the speaker makes the comparison between the everyday skills of a woman and the miraculous works of God. Due to the strong belief in God during the Puritan ages, it was fairly normal for people (especially writers) to create a connection between Him and their everyday life and tasks. For Edward Taylor to make this connection in "Huswifery", he not only shows his strong belief in God, but he shows how if one puts all his energy and belief in God, He will surely make a way for you.

  7. In the poem "Huswifery" the speaker has a riming system every other line rimes. these makes the story interesting and makes the reader want to keep reading, also the speaker makes the poem like she is praying for something very important, but really she is explaining how to make clothing and at the same time thanking god for the things she has to make the clothing that she wears.

  8. "Huswifery" is defined as a business of a housewife, a female domestic economy skill, the speaker is talking about making clothes with the spinning wheel which is showing the female side during the Puritan period for women. Edward Taylor is showing us what the Puritan women did and their daily life and how they look up to God and want to have his praise. The effects gives us a idea of how all the comparisons are made and everything the Puritan women did.

  9. The speaker is metaphorically comparing the process of producing beautiful clothing to living a life of ardent work in the name of the Lord. He draws this comparison in order illustrate the zealous desire in his prayer- to be a good servant in the glory of God. It has the effect of allowing the reader to understand how the speaker wishes to devote his existence to glorifying God and living a righteous life, because the metaphor takes something spiritual and puts it in the context of something physical and easier to understand.

  10. Edward Taylor compares huswifery, which is defined as the duties of housewives, with the work of God (i.e. holy word and distaff, ordinances and fulling mills...). The intent of using conceit is to delineate the poet's prayer and glorification of God's miraculous salvation work in a poetic way. This use of conceit has an effect of making it easier for the readers to comprehend the Puritan belief by correlating God's work with "huswifery", which was what females were responsible of in their daily lives.

  11. The speaker compares the parts of a spinning wheel, the parts of a loom, and the end product of the two to the speaker's relationship with God. The speaker makes the comparison to make God and His works, which are not tangible, more real and relatable to someone familiar with spinning wheels and looms. The effect is that the reader gets a more personal relationship with God

  12. In the poem “Huswifery”, by Edward Taylor, the speaker uses poetic conceit and equates the different parts of “God’s spinning wheel” for making cloth to various aspects of life. These two very different things are being compared by the speaker in order to show the Lord that if he gives him or her good fortune, he will then in return give glory to God. The effect that Edward Taylor gave off by using poetic conceit was, alike most Puritans, glorify and praise the Lord.

  13. In the poem "Huswifery", the speaker makes a comparison between the business (daily life) of a house wife and the business of Puritans. The speaker makes this comparison because he tries to show that being a servant to God is the central of the Puritans' lives, and they feel proud and happy like the women feel about their house work. It allows the readers to understand what is "Huswifery" to Puritans, and how the speaker eagerly wants to serve for God and his royalty to God.

  14. The speaker compares the common task, by Puritan women, of spinning and making cloth to the workings of the Lord and how he gives virtuous life to the Puritans. He makes this comparison to show the tedious and undying loyalty he has for the Lord showing that they live their lives purely to praise God. The effect clearly makes the reader truly believe the speaker has an undying devotion to God and shows he is willing to try and make all people who read his poem try and understand his faith.

  15. The author of this poem, being a Puritan and therefore, very religious, writes about God and how He compares and contrasts with us, mere mortals. He introduces this comparison in order to show the reader how powerful God is and how His actions are much more valuable and miraculous that the things a normal person does in his/her life. The effect that the author tries to achieve is to make the reader realize that God is superior to everything that goes on on Earth.
